Tonight’s Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees meeting, set for seven at 333. E. Eighth St., doesn’t promise much in the way of intrigue. But board meetings can surprise, so be sure to check out PCCD Board Watch Thursday morning to see what you missed—assuming, that is, that you won’t be joining PFT in the boardroom this evening . . .
In other news:
*PFT has eye-catching new t-shirts. Rock your tee—free to all PFT members—at the March 1 and March 5 actions in support of higher education. Ask your campus rep or call the PFT office at 510.763.8820 to get your glow on today.
*Join PFT Sat., March 24, at 7:30 p.m., at the Oracle Arena, as the Golden State Warriors tip off against their NorCal rivals, the Sacramento Kings. A fundraiser for PFT COPE, the game marks the union’s first family and friends sporting event. Buy your $25 ticket at the PFT (500 E. 8th St., corner of 5th Ave./E. 8th St.) during office hours, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
*PFT and the Peralta Retirees Organization hosted a lively retirement workshop Feb. 22. Packed into PFT HQ, future retirees got valuable information about how Peralta benefits work, with particular emphasis on navigating Medicare. Many thanks to PRO President Jerry Herman and VP Bruce Jacobs for their thoroughness, clarity, and good humor. PFT will offer another workshop later in the semester—don’t miss it!
*Community colleges are slated for devastating midyear cuts unless we can rally and get legislators to backfill the hole caused by unexpected revenue shortfalls. Call your legislators and let them know how we’re affected (502 sections lost this year, $2.7 million in new cuts to come). Go to FACCC’s Leg Center and click “Mid Year Budget Shortfall.” Log in—FACCC doesn’t keep your info—and the tool will locate your legislators and provide you with a modifiable form letter. Looking for another way to stop the bleeding from ongoing cuts to public education? Sign and circulate petitions to get CFT’s Millionaires Tax on the fall ballot. Visit millionairestaxca.com or call PFT at 510.763.8820 for more info.
*PFT continues contract talks with the district Wed., Feb. 29. (Faculty should have received the latest PFT Negotiations Update in their mailboxes last week, which also appears on the PFT website: www.pft1603.org.) Look for fresh updates after the Leap Year negotiations.
