Dear Peralta Community,
Board night means another PFT e-Communiqué, the union’s rundown of PCCD news and events. Got something for us? Email PFT Communications Director Debby Weintraub at
*The Peralta Board of Trustees meets tonight at 7 at 333 E. Eighth St. Don’t let the slender agenda keep you from showing up to remind trustees to make students—and the faculty and support staff they need to succeed—their top priority.
*Head to BCC Sat., Oct. 29, for the Against Cuts/Global Studies Club teach-in and town hall meeting, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the atrium and auditorium. The day includes organizing workshops, practical strategy sessions, and lunch. RSVP at mail@againstcuts.org.
*Nearly 150 faculty members responded to PFT’s first-ever communications survey, among them BCC/COA part-time Humanities instructor Elizabeth Wing-Paz, Ph.D., who won the $100 iTunes gift-card drawing. PFT learned that most respondents are union members (90%) who read the e-Communiqué with some regularity (92%) and want more coverage of part-time and full-time issues (65%). Look for more detailed survey info in the next Peralta Teacher (which 57% of respondents hope will appear online exclusively).
*PFT unanimously passed a resolution in support of the faculty most harmed by ongoing workforce reductions: “To help limit the loss of part-time jobs, the PFT Executive Council urges full-time faculty not to request extra-service assignments, including during the summer. Keeping faculty employed, particularly in tough economic times, is a fundamental concern of the union.”
The union also passed a resolution backing the local Occupy movements: “PFT endorses Occupy Oakland and Occupy Berkeley, and urges Peralta faculty to visit the occupations, tell students about them, and donate items such as books, food, clothing, equipment, and money.” Send checks—made out to OEA (w/ Occupy Oakland in the for line)—to the Oakland Education Association, 272 E. 12th St., Ste. C, Oakland, CA 94606.
*PFT encourages faculty to vote for Sharon Hendricks in her bid to become the first community college representative on the CalSTRS board. Hendricks, out of LACC’s Local 1521, has been endorsed by PFT, CFT, and FACCC. Click here for more information about the election.
In solidarity,
